How the Beef Seasons 1 and 2 Casts BondedNetflix

Season 2 of Beef is on Netflix, and fans of the series know—things spiral fast. But if you loved season 1 of Beef, you may be wondering if the two seasons are connected at all.

The first season focused on a minor road rage incident that escalates and takes over the lives of the two main characters, Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) and Amy Lau (Ali Wong). But season 2 takes place in a country club and centers on the heightening feud between a millennial couple and a Gen Z couple. It also features a whole new A-list cast: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny.

Here’s everything you about whether season 1 and season 2 of Beef are connected.

NetflixIs the story of Beef season 2 connected to season 1?

No, the two seasons are not connected story-wise. The creator of the show, Lee Sung Jin, was clear that he wanted the show to be an anthology. The seasons are only linked thematically, in the sense that they are both an exploration of a “beef” and how it can spiral.

Lee told Netflix’s Tudum: “The intention was always to have it be an anthology. My early pitch to networks included slides with rough examples of potential ‘beefs’ for upcoming seasons. However, because the show was in its first season and its future was uncertain, we intentionally wrote season 1 as a limited series, ending that story with a period—Ali Wong and Steven Yeun’s characters in the hospital bed.”

The show is also based on real incidents from Lee’s life, though. Speaking about season 2, he said, “It was loosely based on a loud argument overheard from a neighbor’s home. The varying reactions from everyone who heard fascinated me. We changed the setting to a workplace because I wanted to explore the boss-employee dynamic more.”

NetflixWill the characters from Beef season 1 return?

Though people were obsessed with Wong and Yeun’s performances in the show, you won’t see them appear in the new season. However, Lee has revealed that Wong visited the set of season 2, and she and Yeun sent food for all the crew who were returned without them.

The season 1 and season 2 actors also hung out together, Lee revealed. “We had a big dinner at Mother Wolf with Steven, Ali, Cailee, Charles, Carey, and Oscar,” he told Netflix. “We did an escape room together. That was Carey’s idea, and then we went straight to dinner. It was a nice way to start the season with a passing of the torch.”

NetflixDo you need to watch season 1 of Beef before watching season 2?

In terms of the plot, no. The two seasons are completely separate, so you won’t struggle to catch up if you haven’t watched season 1. But we do highly recommend you watch season 1 because it is incredible TV. And if you enjoy season 2, you’ll no doubt be digging back into season 1 before long.
