Queen Camilla Pins Her “Lucky Charm” Brooch in a Unique Location for a Day of Horse Racing

Queen Camilla attended a day at the races on August 21—and wore a brooch that has long been thought to bring good luck to the royal family.

The queen interrupted her holiday at Balmoral for a day at York Racecourse, where she sported a custom Dior coatdress and the heirloom ruby, diamond, and sapphire brooch that spells out Minoru.

Camilla opted to pin the accessory to her wide-brimmed straw hat instead of to her coatdress.

Queen Camilla is certainly no stranger to a brooch—but at a recent outing, she shook it up and wore her accessory pinned to a unique place.

On August 21, the queen interrupted her holiday at Balmoral alongside her husband King Charles and other members of the royal family for a day at the races at York Racecourse. Camilla wore a bespoke pink Dior coatdress, which she paired with a wide-brimmed straw hat from royal favorite Lock & Co., beige Eliot Zed heels, her beloved Van Cleef & Arpels agate bracelet, and a Dior two-tone trench bag, per Tatler.

Camilla’s pink coatdress is a re-wear, actually—the queen wore it during her visit to the United States in April alongside the king. She was wearing the ensemble when they arrived to kick off the four-day tour, which commemorated the U.S.’s 250th anniversary; Dior is, notably, a favorite designer of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump.

A staple in Camilla’s wardrobe is a brooch, and for her day at the races last week, she chose a “lucky charm” brooch. Rather than pin it to her coat dress, she opted to pin it to her straw hat instead.

Tatler reported that Camilla often takes this heirloom brooch to races, “perhaps considering it something of a good luck charm.” The ruby, diamond, and sapphire brooch is crafted in the shape of a horseshoe, and she’s worn it multiple times over the years. The letters set within the brooch spell out a unique name—Minoru, which was the name of one of King Edward VII’s “most successful Thoroughbred racehorses,” according to Tatler.

“The piece is considered to be a lucky charm for the royal family,” WWD reported.

After the death of Queen Elizabeth in 2022, Camilla has taken over the mantle of the equestrian-loving senior royal. “Camilla has a real love of racing, and she will be the person who speaks with the trainers each day in the way the queen [Elizabeth] had,” a senior racing source told The Times. John Warren, Queen Elizabeth’s former racing advisor, previously said that Camilla “is absolutely besotted by racing.”

Camilla’s August 21 outing came two days after news broke that Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children would be moving back to the U.K. after six years away, living in Montecito, California. While the Duchess of Sussex is rumored to be eyeing a return to acting, Camilla herself almost had a brush with a famous television show.

The upcoming sixth season of the hit series Only Murders in the Building mostly takes place in the U.K., and the show almost cast Camilla in a cameo role, according to executive producer and showrunner John Hoffman.

Speaking to Vulture, Hoffman said of the celebrity-packed lineup, “We almost got Camilla. I know it’s insane, but yes, there was a moment.” After learning that the queen might be available, “I was like, ‘Wait, what? Is that real?’” he said.

Logistical reasons ultimately stopped the cameo from coming together after Hoffman said he realized that it was “going to be a whole thing” with the show’s already tight production schedule—so the idea was scrapped.
