On October 25, Prince William and Kate Middleton shared a never-before-seen family photo alongside their three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

The snap was taken back in June, as the Princess of Wales completed the Three Peaks Challenge, where she climbed the highest mountains in England, Scotland, and Wales.

The new image was shared to highlight Mountain Rescue Awareness Day, and the Wales family of five was joined in the photo by mountain rescuers.

Prince William and Kate Middleton released a personal message alongside a never-before-seen photo of themselves with their three children Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8. The snap—posted to the Prince and Princess of Wales’s Instagram on October 25—was captured at a mountaintop moment in the future queen’s life, as she completed the grueling Three Peaks Challenge over the summer that saw her climb the highest mountains in England, Scotland, and Wales in just 24 hours.

While the couple had previously shared images from the day Kate completed the challenge, this particular photo—which included mountain rescue teams—had never been seen before. In addition to the Wales family of five and the mountain rescuers, a sweet dog took center stage in the photo, standing right in front of Charlotte and Louis.

On Sunday, William and Kate marked Mountain Rescue Awareness Day by not only sharing the image but also writing alongside it, “On Mountain Rescue Awareness Day, we send our heartfelt thanks to all those who volunteer their time and expertise to keep people safe in some of our most beautiful but challenging landscapes.”

“Through our connection with this remarkable organization, we have seen first-hand the dedication, professionalism, and compassion that define their work,” the couple continued. “Meeting local mountain rescue teams during the Three Peaks Challenge this summer was an opportunity to say thank you in person for the vital role they play in keeping walkers and climbers safe on the mountains all year ‘round.”

The message concluded, “We are incredibly proud to support the extraordinary volunteers who respond in all conditions, often at a moment’s notice, to help others when they need it most. To everyone across the mountain rescue community, thank you for your unwavering commitment, courage, and service.” The message was signed “W & C,” indicating that it had personally come from the Prince and Princess of Wales.

According to Hello!, Mountain Rescue Day “is deliberately held on the day the clocks go back and it gets darker earlier to remind people to be properly prepared for winter conditions, including carrying essential safety equipment such as a torch, before heading to the mountains.”

In addition to Kate completing the Three Peaks Challenge in June, William serves as the royal patron of Mountain Rescue England.

As of October 23, George is presumably home at Forest Lodge with the rest of his family, as his half-term break from studies at Eton College began on Friday and will last through November. The teenage future king began classes at the prestigious all-boys’ school in September, and he boards there full-time.

Ahead of George’s break beginning on Friday, Kate said during a royal engagement on October 22 that “she’s missed him” and is “looking forward to George coming home,” according to Denise Ashton, who met the princess at a cafe inside a charity shop run by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), which Kate serves as patron. “They may be going somewhere [during the break],” Ashton added, per The Telegraph.

On Friday, William made an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, where he not only revealed dreams of being a DJ were he not born to be king—and even had a stage name, DJ Xara—but also revealed he was once mistaken for Prince at a royal engagement.

“I went to a place in Somerset and was looking around some of the local communities there, and one lovely gentleman looked up at me from his seat and said, ‘When are you going to sing?’” the prince said, admitting the request left him puzzled. “He goes, ‘When are you going to sing your performance?’ and the lady behind tapped his arm and went, ‘No, no, no, he’s not that prince.’”

“It turned out he wanted me to sing ‘Purple Rain,’ which I don’t know the lyrics for,” William quipped.

William and Kate’s outings followed a glamorous state banquet at Windsor Castle on October 20, where the royal family hosted the Sultan of Oman. The Princess of Wales wore a bright yellow Elie Saab gown, along with the Queen Mary Lover’s Knot Tiara and heirloom jewelry from Queen Elizabeth’s collection.

“Color is an incredibly immediate form of communication, and this soft, luminous yellow feels optimistic, warm, and welcoming,” fashion designer Amanda Wakeley told Hello!. “Against the grandeur of Windsor Castle and the formality of a state banquet, it brought lightness and a sense of modernity.”

“A darker jewel tone might have felt more conventional and ceremonial, whereas this yellow made the overall impression feel open and approachable,” she added. “It communicates confidence, warmth, and positivity, which are all extremely powerful qualities in the context of royal diplomacy. It also provided a beautiful canvas for the diamonds and pearls without competing with them.”

Noting that Kate had already made a more direct reference to Oman earlier in the day, when she wore the color green—one of the colors of the country’s flag—Wakeley added, “The evening choice felt subtler. It was less about reproducing a national color or symbol and more about recognizing Middle Eastern design excellence on a global stage.”

State visits are an opportunity to show the royal family’s prowess at soft power, with royal biographer Ingrid Seward telling People, “Despite everything that’s going on in the world, we are still the best at putting on a show of pomp and circumstance. Years ago, [King] Charles said we must never lose that, because that is what we do best—and he is absolutely right.”
