NFL eliminates Pro Bowl game 75 years after its inception but keeps one element alive

The NFL is changing its Pro Bowl tradition and festivities after 75 years, but a group of football stars will still earn the distinction without any physical play attached.
For generations, the Pro Bowl has been the NFL's annual Marvel Avengers assembly, where the league’s top stars battle for bragging rights. As of Wednesday, the only thing left of the competition's past will be a simple line of Wikipedia text on a player's NFL resume.
NFL executives presented team owners with a new vision for the Pro Bowl that completely removes the football game from the schedule entirely, according to The Athletic. Meanwhile, the NFL world continues to mourn the loss of Dolly Parton with a look back at her classic 2023 Thanksgiving halftime performance.

The Pro Bowl long was a full-fledged game, regularly held in Hawaii, but eventually came to mean flag football fun, Guinness World Records stunts with passes dropped from helicopters and skills challenges that turned NFL stars into viral sensations across several cities.
Instead of physical competition before the AFC vs NFC showdown, fans will learn about the league's eighty-eight top-voted players named with Pro Bowl honors in a press release, like everything else.

The league is also eliminating alternates filling in. Former players have skipped the actual game because Super Bowl participation, injuries, prevention measures, and fatigue.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders was honored last season while filling in for Super Bowl LX QB Drake Maye despite a 3-4 record as a starter. Baltimore Ravens QB Tyler Huntley was named a replacement in 2022 despite playing only four games.
Last year's flag football Pro Bowl Games matchup ended in a high-scoring 66-52 shootout in favor of the NFC, but also saw record-low viewership of around 2 million.
The numbers were a reported 60 percent decrease from Jared Goff's NFC Offensive MVP performance the year prior. The Pro Bowl's viewership has experienced a steady, significant decline since 2023.

The event's history spans nearly every era of the NFL. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum hosted the game 23 times, including 22 straight editions from 1950 through 1971, before the game moved through Texas, Kansas City, Miami, New Orleans, Seattle, and Tampa.
Hawaii became synonymous with the Pro Bowl after Aloha Stadium hosted 35 editions across multiple stretches from 1979 through 2015. The league later moved the event to Orlando, then Las Vegas, and most recently San Francisco.
Camping World Stadium hosted six times and Allegiant Stadium twice. Last year's Pro Bowl Games were held at the Moscone Center as the NFL continued experimenting with skills competitions and other concepts beyond full-contact play.
