Michelle Obama Makes Hilarious Confession About Her Daughters Malia and Sasha Moving Out of the House

Barack Obama and Michelle Obama are empty nesters; their daughters Malia and Sasha are now 28 and 25, respectively.

On the August 26 episode of her podcast “IMO,” Michelle interviewed Jon Stewart, who said he missed the “energy and excitement” of his kids being around the house.

“I don’t,” Michelle quipped.

Michelle Obama loves her daughters Malia Obama and Sasha Obama—but that doesn’t mean she misses having them around the house and under her roof.

On the August 26 episode of her podcast “IMO With Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson”—which the former first lady hosts with her brother—guest Jon Stewart spoke about being an empty nester and how “then it’s just the two of you,” referring to, in his case, himself and his wife Tracey McShane.

“And it’s a really kind of lovely, like—it’s a comfort,” he continued. “Like you’ve been through all these wars and now you’re kind of just together again on the couch. And you obviously miss, you know, the energy and excitement of the kids being around is so incredible.”

To this, Michelle responded, “I don’t. I love them. I’m going to see them tonight for dinner. I love them. But, you know, Barack cried when they went to college. I was like, ‘Bye, goodbye.’”

“Now I know Friday nights aren’t wrecked with terror and fear about ‘Where are you? Where are you?’” she continued. She added, “I love their emancipation and growth,” to which Stewart replied, “The thing I miss, though, is the job. Like, don’t you miss—your kids are still in high school, so it’s still a job. Like, it gave meaning and a pattern to my life.”

“I’m good,” Michelle quipped. She added, “I mean, I’ve had so much quality time with my children. So much. I know them inside and out.”

Malia and Sasha were 10 years old and 7 years old, respectively, when their father Barack Obama won the presidency in 2008. They were 18 years old and 15 years old, respectively, when he left office in January 2017. Sasha was the youngest child of a president to live in the White House since John F. Kennedy Jr., who was an infant when his father John F. Kennedy became president in 1961.

Speaking on the “Baby This Is Keke Palmer” podcast this year, Michelle said of her daughters, “With them, it was really just trying to keep them focused on their lives. They could never miss school or something that they had to do for school because something cool was happening right at the White House. They only traveled with us on their breaks—so summers, and there’s spring break when they weren’t at camp. So the goal was to make their lives as normal as possible.”

Malia is now 28 and Sasha is 25; according to their proud dad, “They are cooler, smarter funnier…Those two, Malia and Sasha, are all that,” he told People. “If I were their age…I can barely keep up with them at the dinner table now. If I was their contemporary, I would just sit there.”

Malia graduated from Harvard in 2021 and is now a filmmaker, writer, and director; Sasha graduated from the University of Southern California in 2023, and Michelle has shared that she’s continuing her education. Both women have maintained private lives even though the spotlight is on their parents. Malia and Sasha made a rare appearance alongside their parents this summer at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago on June 18.

As Michelle said on Today in 2022, the two are best friends. “There was a period of time when they couldn’t stand each other, and I said, ‘You wait—you are going to wake up one day and you’re going to look over at that other person, and you’re going to know that you two share something very unique,’ especially given what they’ve been through.”

“To see them in that place where they’re one another’s support systems and they’ve got each other’s backs, it’s the thing that a mother would want,” she added.

Of being an empty nester, Michelle recounted what it was like to be invited over to her daughters’ house for martinis and a cheese plate. “We were going to take them to dinner, and they said, ‘Why don’t you come over to our spot for cocktails?’” Michelle said. “And we were like, ‘Okay, let’s see what this is going to be like.’”

“The martinis were a little weak,” Michelle joked, adding that when they got their martini glasses, their daughters asked them to use a coaster. “And I’m like, ‘You never used a coaster in my house,’” she quipped.

Ultimately, “I raised really sane kids,” Michelle told Alex Cooper on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast. “Who aren’t perfect, but they’re really, really good.”
