Jonvic Remulla, the Philippine interior minister, has confirmed police are investigating Thomas Markle Sr. after child pornographic images were allegedly found at his home

Police in the Philippines are investigating materials and a laptop allegedly seized from his home in Cebu

Thomas Sr. has denied the allegations made by his son Thomas Markle Jr.

Thomas Markle Sr. has been branded “a possible sex offender of the grossest kind” following his sexual abuse allegations by the Philippine interior minister.

The Sun reported on Thursday, Oct. 22, that Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Sr., 82, is being investigated after his son, Thomas Markle Jr., allegedly found child pornographic materials at his home in Cebu, Philippines. Thomas Sr. denied the allegations to the Daily Mail on Friday, Oct. 23.

In an article published by The Guardian on Sunday, Oct. 25, Philippine interior minister Jonvic Remulla confirmed that local authorities are analyzing digital images allegedly belonging to Thomas Sr. that were discovered at his home.

“In these cases where family disputes are mixed up, we have to consider all the angles,” he told the outlet. “Right now all signs point to a possible sex offender of the grossest kind. We want to be sure before we release the findings. The forensics data will be complete in a week.”

“Please give us a week to determine the contents and to come up with a definitive picture. We will release a statement then,” Remulla added.

PEOPLE has reached out to Remulla for comment.

Thomas Markle Jr. said he alerted police after he allegedly found four large boxes containing “hundreds, if not thousands” of child pornographic images at his father’s home, including one photo of a naked girl that appeared to be taken at Thomas Sr.’s former home in Rosarito, Mexico, per The Sun.

Thomas Sr., who is currently in a rehab center in Florida, responded to the accusations, per the Daily Mail, “This is bulls--t. It’s just a bunch of lies. It’s sick. I have no idea why Tom is trying to destroy me with these lies.”

On Saturday, Oct. 24, Remulla confirmed that the Philippine National Police (PNP) seized a laptop allegedly belonging to Thomas Sr., as well as “a trove of child pornography materials” from his former home for investigation, Philstar and Global News reported.

“The PNP upon the reports of the son, inspected the former home of a certain Mr. Thomas Markle,” Remulla told Global News. “The laptop is currently going under forensic investigation and we will have the full results in one week.”

The PNP also confirmed their investigation into Thomas Markle Sr., telling Daily Tribune, “The PNP is conducting an investigation into the reported discovery of suspected child sexual abuse and exploitation materials and other personal belongings allegedly linked to Mr. Thomas W. Markle Sr.”

“The PNP will first secure the appropriate warrant before any examination of the data from the digital devices can be conducted,” the spokesperson added.

In an Oct. 23 statement to PEOPLE, Meghan, 45, said she was “deeply distressed” by the allegations and that her thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed. She also said she’d been made aware of “troubling and disturbing allegations” following her May 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.

Thomas Jr. described his father’s denial as “incredible,” telling The Sun, “I’m sure the huge piles of evidence I’ve taken to the police today will reveal the truth once the police experts examine it. I would never have handed it all to the police if I wasn’t 1,000 percent confident that it has nothing to do with me.”
