Katie Couric is a big reader!
The famed journalist, 69, shares how her reading habits have changed since launching her book club earlier this year in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the Runway for Recovery fundraising event on April 30 in New York City.
“I'm reading more,” Couric says. “I am addicted to my phone so having a book that I need to read, because I'll be interviewing the author and other people are reading it, and it's a very serious assignment, has really made me read more.”
“I'm starting to look for books that aren't necessarily our book club selection because I want to read more than one book a month,” she continues.

The Katie Couric Media founder adds that she believes more people have "rediscovered reading” for multiple reasons.
“I think they feel connected to books and they want to get away from technology,” she says. “There's certainly this trend among young people. A friend of mine said she actually has been seeing many more young people reading actual books on the subway. And I think that is really wonderful because there are so many great books out there and so many great writers, and it's yet another way to build community and feel connected to other people.”
Connection, Couric notes, is starting to feel more and more absent from everyday life.

“We are very connected and yet we've never felt less connected because of technology. For whatever reason, having this shared experience of reading a book together, and then for me, talking to the author about that book and getting other people to be able to ask questions of the author is a really fun thing. And it's made me fall in love with reading again because I had gotten out of the habit of reading books,” she says.
"I read a lot of news reports and I read magazine articles, and I read what's happening and what people are talking about on social media. But that's different from reading a great work of fiction and escaping the world around you, and just becoming a part of that imaginary world that someone has invented,” the Today alum shares.
Couric announced her book club, KCBC, on Jan. 1 to support her New Year's resolution to read more books. Speaking with PEOPLE after the launch, she shared how she selects each month’s book.
"I'm just going to pick one and hope that people like it and that they're excited by it," she said, adding that she plans to feature mostly fiction. "I think I'm really excited to read more fiction, to be honest with you, because I read so much about what's happening in the world."
